Currents and topography drive assemblage distribution on an active hydrothermal edifice ArchiMer
Girard, Fanny; Sarrazin, Jozee; Arnaubec, Aurelien; Cannat, Mathilde; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Wheeler, Benjamin; Matabos, Marjolaine.
The deep sea is characterized by a wide range of landscapes, including complex features where topography and currents interact to form highly heterogeneous habitats. In addition to a complex topography, hydrothermal vent environments are characterized by strong environmental gradients that structure the spatial distribution of biological communities. The role of vent fluid temperature and chemical composition on species distribution is now well understood, but investigations on the effects of the complex sulfide edifice topography are scarce. Here, we used a novel approach combining 3D photogrammetric reconstruction, in situ environmental measurements and modeling to characterize assemblage distribution on the active edifice Eiffel Tower (Lucky Strike,...

The general objective of EXOCET/D is to develop, implement and test specific instruments aimed at exploring, describing, quantifying and monitoring biodiversity in deep-sea fragmented habitats as well as at identifying links between community structure and environmental dynamics. Onboard experimental devices will complement the approach, enabling experiments on species physiology. The EXOCET/D working fields include: video and acoustic imagery, in situ analysis of physico-chemical factors, quantitative sampling of macroand micro-organisms, in vivo experiments, integration of multidisciplinary data, implementation on European deep-submersibles and a final phase of technical and scientific validation

Heureuse surprise ! Évidence photographique de la présence d’un cadavre d’animal nectonique de taille moyenne sur le plancher océanique ArchiMer
Soltwedel, T; Von Juterzenka, K; Premke, K; Klages, M.
Although the use of deep-sea imagery considerably increased during the last decades, reports on nekton falls to the deep seafloor are very scarce. Whereas there are a few reports describing the finding of whale carcasses in the deep north-eastern and south-eastern Pacific, descriptions of invertebrate or vertebrate food-falls at centimetre to metre scale are extremely rare. After 4 years of extensive work at a deep-sea long-term station in northern polar regions (AWI-"Hausgarten"), including large-scale visual observations with various camera systems covering some 10 000 m(2) of seafloor at water depths between 1250 and 5600 m, this paper describes the first observation of a fish carcass at about 1280 m water depth, west off Svalbard. The fish skeleton had...

In situ growth of deep-sea octocorals after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill ArchiMer
Girard, Fanny; Cruz, Rafaelina; Glickman, Orli; Harpster, Tyler; Fisher, Charles R..
Although the role of deep-sea corals in supporting biodiversity is well accepted, their ability to recover from anthropogenic impacts is still poorly understood. An important component of recovery is the capacity of corals to grow back after damage. Here we used data collected as part of an image-based long-term monitoring program that started in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to develop a non-destructive method to measure in situ growth rates of Paramuricea spp. corals and characterize the impact of the spill on growth. About 200 individual coral colonies were imaged every year between 2011 and 2017 at five sites (three that were impacted by the spill and two that were not). Images were then used to test different methods for measuring...

Methode de cartographie quantitative des ulves "offshore" ArchiMer
Merceron, Michel; Lunven, Michel.
Recent studies in the bays of Douarnenez and La Forêt-Fouesnant have proved that drifting stocks of « offshore » ulva exist between -2 and -20 meters depth. These stocks are nearly as important in weight as those located in the tidal zone, the only ones which are generally studied. It is likely that such « offshore » stocks also exist elsewhere in Brittany. The sampling method by discrete stations visited by divers, which has been used till now, is considered heavy and not precise enough. The new method involves a film camera set on a fish towed at a speed of a few knots. The fish is kept above the sea bottom at a chosen altitude controlled by a guiderope. The system is sturdy, autonomous, and can be easily transferred from one boat to another. The...

Prediction of crude fat content of longissimus muscle of beef using the ratio of fat area calculated from computer image analysis: Comparison of regression equations for prediction using different input devices at different stations OAK
Kuchida, Keigo; Kono, S; Konishi, Kazuyuki; Van Vleck, L. D.; Suzuki, Mitsuyoshi; Miyoshi, Syunzou.
Crude fat content of longissimus (ribeye) muscle of beef cattle was predicted from a ratio of fat area (RFA) to area of ribeye muscle calculated from computer image analysis (CIA). Cross sections of 64 ribeyes taken from the 6-7(th) rib from cattle at experiment station A and cross sections of 94 ribeyes taken from the 6-7(th) rib from cattle at Experiment Station B were used in this study. Slices (1 to 1.5 cm in thickness) of just the Longissimus dorsi were homogenized and sampled for chemical estimation of crude fat content using petroleum ether. Crude fat content as determined from chemical analysis was used as the true estimate of fat content. A CCD (charge-coupled device) camera was used as the input device at Experiment Station A, and a single-lens...

Structure et dynamique temporelle des communautés hydrothermales inféodées à la dorsale Juan de Fuca : utilisation d'une approche observatoire fond de mer ArchiMer
Lelièvre, Yann.
Hydrothermal vents are distributed along mid-ocean ridges and back-arc basins. These ecosystems harbour a specialized fauna supported by a local chemosynthetic microbial production, made possible through the oxidation of reduced elements present in the hydrothermal fluid. While the relationships between faunal assemblages and habitats have been relatively well described around the globe, our knowledge on the temporal dynamics of these environments is still limited, particularly at time scale relevant to organisms (from few minutes to several years). Based on hydrothermal vent communities occurring on the Juan de Fuca Ridge, located in the northeast Pacific Ocean, this thesis aims at understanding the functioning and temporal dynamics of macrofaunal...

TEMPO: a new ecological module for studying deep-sea community dynamics at hydrothermal vents ArchiMer
Sarrazin, Jozee; Blandin, Jerome; Delauney, Laurent; Dentrecolas, Stephane; Dorval, Philippe; Dupont, Jacky; Legrand, Julien; Leroux, D.; Leon, Pierre; Leveque, Jean-jacques; Rodier, Philippe; Vuillemin, Renaud; Sarradin, Pierre-marie.
The major goal of this project, elaborated in the frame of the STREP Exocet/D European project, was to design a first autonomous long-term imaging module equipped with a deep-sea video camera, adequate lightning and sufficient energy storage while taking advantage of most recent progress in imaging and photonics. The new ecological module TEMPO was tested and deployed during the Momareto cruise held from August 6 to September 6, 2006 on the new French oceanographic vessel Pourquoi pas?, with the ROV Victor 6000. The scientific objectives of the Momareto cruise were to study the spatial and temporal dynamics of hydrothermal communities colonizing the MoMAR zone, located on the Azores Triple Junction.

Marsset, Tania; Marsset, Bruno; Thomas, Yannick; Didailler, Stephane.
This note presents the first results of the development of a 3D Very High Resolution seismic method. Particular attention was paid to the design of an operational system to be in agreement with the expected goals in term of acquisition and processing. A set of three examples, collected in various geological environments, is presented.
